I first decided to teach Soccer to the Andrew and Grace Home girls after having a farewell dinner that my colleague Hai-yen
organized at the Home, for my Former boss at Simei ITE. The dinner consisted of some awesome Thai cooking from the resident chef aunty Noi.
While at the dinner I noticed the fun nature and togetherness of the girls at the home and how keen they were to take part in physical activity. After further discussion with the sports development officer and former Simei ITE student Devi, I agreed to take football session’s every Friday for the girls. However we had a few problems as we have no equipment to help with the Football sessions. After making a few phone calls and sending some e mails, my friend’s company, Rulewave, decided to sponsor 35 football and cones.
As I arrived for my first day of coaching at the home I was greeted by 20 girls asking “who is this strange man with the funny accent and how come he looks nothing like Cristiano Ronaldo”. After the girls could finally understand me, we went to the soccer field just around the corner from the home.
Initially the girls were a little hesitant as it was the first time some of them have been involved in football. However as the football session’s and weeks have continued, there has been a great improvement in their work rate, team work and overall football technique.
The girls have been a joy to teach over the past 3 months. They are full of life and energy and improving with everyday. If they improve at the rate at which I think they will, we will be able to organize some matches against outside teams in the near future.
Girls, keep the good work up and thanks for all the mandarin lessons. I can now say 3 words.
